A new IT department model?

Or at least an alternative?

Based on some of the articles, blogs and comments I’ve read lately about the crisis in IT management and how it needs to change, I’m proposing the following model for an IT department.

This just came to me so I wanted to get it down before it was lost. It isn’t fully fleshed out yet…but it certainly has some value and would be worth pursuing.

It is based on the types of tasks IT folks perform: technical – business related.

  1. Identify the technical tasks which would fall under the ‘commodity and utility’ heading and out source them.
  2. That leaves you with the business related tasks and I don’t mean the business of running the department, but the integration of technology into your company’s business.
